Chapter 21

Madame Boissenneau tapped my arm. “Let’s get back to the Academy. You’ve already missed most of this morning’s class.”

I fell in at her side, but my mind was too full to watch where we were going. I became aware of my surroundings once we were far down the valley heading back to the Academy. I didn’t see Madame Boissenneau reactivate the protection spell around the Academy, but when I glanced behind me, I had no doubt that Madame Boissenneau had activated it.

Madame Boissenneau herself woke me from my confused thoughts. “I understand you and the other students have some concerns for your families outside the Academy.”

“Can you blame us? The Companions Unit is supposed to enforce the law, not break it by slaughtering innocent Fae.”

Madame Boissenneau shook her head, gazing straight ahead. “You don’t understand. None of you do, or you wouldn’t question decisions far above your understanding. The Ministers are the ones who decide what the Companions Unit does and doesn’t do. If you want to blame someone for what’s going on, you should blame them.”

I rounded on her and spoke without thinking. “Are you saying my own father threw my mother into a prison camp? I’ll never believe that. I’ll never believe the Ministers ordered the Companions Unit to kill defenseless villagers, or that they claimed the hybrids deserved to die because they were in league with the Damen, or that the Ministers wanted the Companions to kill pure-blooded Fae to isolate the hybrids from society. There isn’t a force under Heaven that can convince me of that.”

Madame Boissenneau remained immaculately unmoved by this outburst. “That, my dear, is because you don’t understand what is going on. If you knew everything, you would realize there are reasons for these things. You’re enjoying some much-needed success at the Academy right now. It would be a shame for you to squander that by interfering in matters that don’t concern you and which you can’t begin to understand. None of you can. Perhaps when you’re old enough, you’ll learn all the facts. Then you’ll come to realize that those of us who bear the responsibility for Lakeshore’s future can see things that you cannot.”

I shook my head, but I bit off the arguments that were fighting to be heard. The real problem was that Madame Boissenneau was right. I was just a student — we all were. We didn’t understand what was going on outside the Academy.

Who were we to question the Ministers or even Madame Boissenneau herself? Surely, they must know better. Madame Boissenneau herself knew more about the political landscape of Lakeshore than most Ministers. Even my father had said so.

How easy it would be to just go along with this…. whatever it was. I could keep astounding not only my fellow students, but also powerful hybrids like Nykxi and Master Cyzyr with what they called my exceptional abilities.

Madame Boissenneau stopped me just downhill from the bowl. She cast a flinty gaze in the direction of the Zaloras’ singing.
